Naturopathic Doctors (NDs)
Naturopathic doctors undergo extensive educational training involving a four-year pre-medical science degree, followed by four years (5,000 hours) of rigorous training and practicum at an accredited naturopathic medical college. Here they study biomedical sciences, pharmacology and diagnostic studies similar to medical doctors, in addition to natural, evidence-based modalities such as botanical medicine and acupuncture. Training also requires 1,200 hours of supervised clinical experience. Finally, prospective NDs are required to pass the North American standardized examinations (NPLEX) and clinical board examinations.
In order to practice naturopathic medicine in Ontario, naturopathic doctors must maintain professional membership with the Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors (OAND), the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors (CAND)and obtain licensure through the Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy - Naturopathy (BDDT-N).
